VALLEY OF TEARS

They trusted their leaders, their country.
They were wrong.

On October 6th 1973, the Middle East was shaken by the biggest war it had ever seen. A war that should have been the last one, and that forever changed the region. Young soldiers, no older than 20, fought by their fathers’ sides, torn from their peaceful lives and thrown into a war over their very existence.

Based on a true story, Valley of Tears is an ten-part miniseries depicting the Yom Kippur War through the eyes of young combatants. It tells three emotional and highly personal stories of individuals swept away from their loved ones by the ravages of war, three parallel plotlines, intertwined together into one climactic battle.

Creators

Ron Leshem and Amit Cohen are writers-producers best known for the drama series Euphoria, and False Flag, as well as the upcoming Hulu-Arte series No Man's Land. Uma Thurman's Apple TV+ series Suspicion which is now in production, is an adaptation of False Flag.

Leshem served as head of content and programming for Keshet TV. He picked up and oversaw the development of some of the most popular and successful Israeli series, including the original of Homeland, The A-word, Arab Labor, Traffic Light, Baker and the Beauty. The film Beaufort, which Leshem co-wrote, was nominated for the Academy Awards. He won Israel's top literary award and his novels are translated to 20 languages.

Cohen co-created and wrote False Flag which broke existing drama records in Israel and became the highest ever-rated launch of a scripted show in first prime. It won the Grand Prix at France's Series Mania festival and was acquired to broadcast in 130 territories.

Together Cohen and Leshem also created and co-wrote The Gordin Cell (adapted into English-language series Allegiance by NBC Universal). The Israeli original series was referred by The Guardian as one of the six best global drama series out of UK in 2014.

Creators’ Statement

Valley of Tears brings the story of the Yom Kippur war as never seen before, experienced through the eyes of ordinary soldiers on the ground. We get to know our heroes in two parallel timelines: in the first, they are as they were before the war, free-spirited and naïve in the early 1970s. In the second, they are in the line of fire, at terrifying crossroads, doing things they would never dare under any other circumstances, transforming into different creatures in the grip of fear for their lives.

This is a universal story about a group of young men, full of life, thrown into the shock of battle and its intoxicating, addictive effects as well as its absurdity. It is also the most dramatic moment in Israel’s history, a chapter never before depicted on television”.
